Kyle Halstead is a science educator with Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) Discovery Hall Programs. He leads K-12 educational activities, develops materials for teacher professional development workshops and conducts outreach programs aimed at underserved and underprivileged communities. He is a member of the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Engagement and Education Team working to increase ocean and science literacy among students of all ages.
Before stepping into the realm of education, Kyle was a research assistant at DISL. During this time, he contributed to research projects focusing on sulfur elemental cycling and plankton ecology, which enhanced his understanding of marine science and research methodologies. In his current role, he communicates research findings to students, educators and the public.
Kyle has a master’s degree in marine sciences from the University of South Alabama, where his research focused on sulfur elemental cycling and plankton ecology. He also has a bachelor’s degree in organismal/marine biology from Spring Hill College.
