The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Legal Program will offer the continuing education course “Recent Developments in Takings Law: A Workshop for Planners” from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, at Courtyard by Marriott Gulfport Beachfront, 1600 East Beach Blvd., Gulfport, Miss.

The workshop is free, and space is limited. Registration is open to all, but priority will be given to coastal planners and attorneys working with coastal communities along the Gulf Coast. Accreditation is being sought from the American Planning Association and the Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana Bar Associations. 

Speakers will discuss these subjects:

  • The history of takings
  • The state of eminent domain law following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Kelo v. City of New London
  • Regulatory takings and planning for dynamic coasts
  • The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) and regulatory takings
