Interest in living shorelines and alternative shoreline stabilization methods continues to grow throughout the Gulf region and the nation. In June, we (the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Legal Program) were asked to participate in a NOAA-funded living shoreline research report led by Restore America’s Estuaries.

The draft report, Living Shorelines: From Barriers to Opportunities, debuted in November at the national Summit on Coastal and Estuarine Research in National Harbor, Maryland. The team of authors is currently reviewing comments received on the draft. The final report will be available in early 2015.

In addition, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant and partners hosted a successful workshop on living shorelines earlier this year that brought together homeowners, regulators, researchers and contractors to discuss successes and challenges. And many presentations at the recent Bays and Bayous Symposium centered on the use of living shorelines.
