This year’s Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant-supported Master Oyster Gardening Program marked an exciting milestone for oyster gardening on the northern Gulf Coast. Designed to make oyster gardening accessible to everyone, including those without waterfront property, the program successfully certified its first class of Master Oyster Gardeners this past October.

Throughout the program, attendees explored a wide range of topics through a combination of educational lectures and field trips. Early sessions introduced the fundamentals of oyster ecology, anatomy and the restoration strategies being used in Mobile Bay.
A visit to the Auburn Shellfish Lab guided attendees through the oyster lifecycle, from spawning to harvest size, offering insights into how shellfish develop. At a local oyster farm, participants witnessed how oysters are cultivated, providing a closer look at their journey from farm to table.
A visit to a gardening site demonstrated how volunteers can contribute to restoration by caring for their own oysters at home and the impact individuals can make. The program wrapped up in October with a seafood safety session, emphasizing the role of regulations to protect consumer health, followed by a celebration of the graduating class.
The program has sparked enthusiasm among participants, many of whom expressed excitement about staying involved in oyster gardening and restoration efforts. We are proud of the dedication shown by everyone who completed the program and look forward to offering it again.
