DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. – The deadline for high-school students to take part in Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Marine Science Summer High School Program is fast approaching.
The program offers students in grades 9 through 12 the chance to explore – literally and academically – the world of marine science. The course will run from June 19 to July 15.
Students will live at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, learn through field experiences, participate in lectures and have the chance to earn school credit. Course topics include marine vertebrate and invertebrate animals, marine plants, marine ecology and oceanography. Students also will participate in a behind-the-scenes tour of the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and an overnight snorkeling trip to Panama City, Fla.
Field activities include weekly trips aboard the Sea Lab’s research vessel, the Alabama Discovery, trips to local salt marshes, to barrier island shores, a behind-the-scenes tour at an aquarium and an overnight snorkeling trip. Students work with sampling gear, such as plankton nets, otter/shrimp trawls, seine nets, bottom grabs and instruments that sense water quality characteristics. Other activities include dissections, identification labs, GPS mapping and an individual research project.
In order to participate in the summer course, students should apply by April 4.
