Exactly one year ago several of us were touring a new venue for the Bays and Bayous Symposium and solidifying plans for exciting additions to the program. Little did we know how different it would ultimately be. Like many other things in 2020, the Bays and Bayous steering committee had to navigate through uncharted waters that kept the needs and priorities of speakers, panelists and attendees at the forefront of every decision.

The results have been impressive, and the symposium will be memorable. With more than 160 presentations, a mix of live events and pre-recorded presentations, opportunities to directly engage with every presenter via chat and a seafood demonstration that is guaranteed to surprise everyone with at least one new factoid or technique, there is something sure to please every person who attends the symposium.

The core of the symposium is unchanged: high-quality science-based presentations that cover an array of coastal topics. How it will be presented this year is completely different. Since this is a 100% virtual platform, you can come and go as you please, move from “room” to “room” without going through a squeaky door, having trouble finding a seat, or getting mixed up on which “room” had the presentation you wanted to catch. Don’t like conference food or drinks? Not a problem—make your own. Concerned about social distancing but don’t like wearing a mask? Then log in mask-free. Also, for the first time we’ll have lightning talks that are three-minutes each, so you can get a taste of a topic and then can follow up immediately with the speaker to get more details.

If you need to recover from final exams, your Thanksgiving feast or a busy virtual or in-person shopping weekend, then join us for a special Bays and Bayous Symposium on Dec. 1-Dec. 3. Best of all, thanks to the generous sponsors and the steering committee, this event will waive the typical $100-$150 registration fee and will be free for anyone who registers.

There are limited registrations, so do not delay. Register today: https://bbs20.baysandbayous.org/. Once you register, you can join any live event and watch pre-recorded presentations during designated times in the program or at later at your leisure.

We hope to “see” you at the first-ever virtual Bays and Bayous Symposium. Don’t forget to invite your friends and colleagues to join us, too. Finally, thank you to the presenters, committee members, registrants and sponsors for joining us as we continue on this new adventure.
