Abstracts for the Dec. 1-3 virtual 2020 Bays and Bayous Symposium are due Monday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. This year’s theme is “Sound Science, Sound Policy: A 2020 Vision for the Future.”

The program committee invites scientists, resource managers, students, elected officials or agency representatives, community action group members, industry representatives and others to highlight their research findings and environmental efforts through oral or lightning-talk presentations at the symposium. This symposium focuses on the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Track topics include the following:

  • Disasters and Disruptions: New research, perspectives and/or updates on human and ecological impacts, restoration, extension and education, and outreach-related discoveries related to major disruptions and disasters (hurricanes, oil spills, pandemics, freshwater inflow) affecting the Gulf Coast.
  • Healthy Coastal Ecosystems: Insights and research about habitat protection, conservation and restoration in light of the inevitable changes to our coasts.
  • Living Marine Resources: Research that addresses management questions necessary for sustainability of the Gulf of Mexico ranging from single species to entire ecosystems.
  • Resilient Communities and Economies: How communities adapt to natural, anthropogenic and social impacts of coastal hazards.
  • Water Quantity and Quality: Assessment of alterations in water quality and quantity, identification of human health and ecosystem impacts, and improved management of the critical resource.

A detailed description of each track can be found on the event website.

Oral presentations will be submitted as pre-recorded, 12-minute talks. And, pre-recorded three-minute, three-slide lightning talks will replace posters in the new virtual format. Further details on how to record a PowerPoint presentation and upload it through the event website will be provided after abstracts are accepted.

Student presenters will be eligible for the 2020 Mike deGruy Bays and Bayous Symposium Student Presentation Awards in both oral and lightning talk categories. Award winners will receive $300 (first place), $200 (second place) and $100 (third place).
