Oyster Gardening season is wrapping up for the year in Alabama and Mississippi! We are excited to get final counts for each location over the next few weeks.
Oyster pickups in Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores, Alabama, were the last week of October, and gardeners produced 41,954 oysters that were planted in Mobile Bay. Mobile Bay Oyster Gardening oysters will be picked up later this month and planted as well.
It remains to be seen what the final numbers will be in Mississippi. The heavy rains earlier this year impacted the salinity resulting in high mortality at the beginning of the season. As we close out on our fifth year of the Mississippi Oyster Gardening Program, we are happy to announce that over 100,000 oysters have been planted in the Mississippi Sound. We look forward to growing this program and producing more oysters over the next five years.
As we enter the New Year, we will be preparing gear for new gardeners and replacing lost or damaged gear. If you are interested in getting involved in oyster gardening – all you need is 30 minutes to spare every 7-10 days and pier access. If you would like to participate in the 2022 season, please reach out to us.
