Attend our 50th anniversary celebrations

By: Melissa Schneider / Published: Nov 03, 2022

Mark your calendars! We are planning two receptions in November to celebrate the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium’s 50th anniversary.

The first event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 6-8 p.m. at the Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. The second event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the Seafood and Maritime Industry Museum in Biloxi, Mississippi. Both receptions will include seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. The events are free, but you must RSVP.

As we celebrate our accomplishments, we would like to thank everyone who has been part of our Sea Grant team: our past and present research scientists, students, volunteers, stakeholders, partners, advisors, employees, educators, extension specialists, legal professionals and many others. Be sure to join us at a 50th event.

Our mission is to provide integrated university- and college-based research, education and engagement programs to coastal communities that lead to the responsible use of ocean and coastal resources in Alabama and Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico through informed personal, policy and management decisions.

Our focus areas have evolved over the years. The National Sea Grant College Program’s current focus areas, and subsequently ours, include environmental literacy and workforce development; healthy coastal ecosystems; resilient communities and economies; and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

Today’s consortium members include Auburn University, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, The University of Mississippi, The University of Southern Mississippi and the University of South Alabama.
