The Alabama Water Access Study Committee held public meetings in Decatur, Montgomery and Dauphin Island to accept comments on its planned recommendations to the state Legislature. The committee is tasked with studying the loss and potential loss of the diversity of uses along the shorelines of Alabama and how the losses impact access to the public trust waters of the state. Some of the committee’s draft recommendations include creating financial incentives for working waterfront businesses, developing industrial parks for commercial fisheries-related businesses and services, and including provisions for working waterfronts in long-term local and state planning efforts. “The adoption of some or all of the recommendations will lead to the preservation of working waterfronts not just along the coast, but statewide,” said MASGC Extension Specialist Jody Thompson, who is working to facilitate the committee’s efforts. |
