Potential end-users test tool
for sea-level rise planning

Patty Howell (l.) and Carl Schneider try out the toolNatural resource managers, scientists and industry professionals attended a Biloxi meeting in October to critique a sea-level-rise model that is under construction. The model simulates what would happen to coastlines and waterfront areas with 3 feet or 6 feet of sea-level rise.

About 30 people offered feedback on the project, which is being developed in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States Geological Survey and the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium.

“It’s a tool that will help coastal resource managers plan for future development and help community leaders keep sea-level rise in mind,” said Tracie Sempier, outreach coordinator of the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Coastal Storms Program.

The visualization tool, which is a pilot project, includes coastal areas of Alabama and Mississippi.
