Projects

Community engagement during the development of the Alabama Coastal Comprehensive Plan

End Date: 05/31/15

Objectives

To develop an Alabama Coastal Comprehensive Plan

Methodology

Development of the Alabama Coastal Comprehensive Plan (ACCP) will be a participatory process, with stakeholder involvement incorporated into each phase of plan development and implementation.  The State of Alabama—though the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), State Lands Division—will work with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Mississippi/Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (Sea Grant) to implement stakeholder involvement components of the ACCP.

Rationale

The ACCP will create opportunities for the collaboration of local, state and federal agencies and Alabama coastal residents to maximize the use of resources in support of the comprehensive planning effort and promote environmental literacy among all audiences; reduce the susceptibility of residential, commercial and public infrastructure to storm damages; improve habitats for coastal and marine resources to support commercial and recreational harvest; assist in the recovery of natural and human-made features damaged by erosion or unwise land use and development decisions; promote long-term erosion reduction during future natural hazards; promote diversification of economies within the two coastal counties as a means of economic resilience from future hazards.
