Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative

About the Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative

About

The Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative (NGOM SSC) is one of the five Sentinel Site Cooperatives within the broader NOAA Sentinel Site Program (SSP). The NGOM SSC is a partnership focused on sea-level rise and inundation in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

A broad array of partners working along the science to stewardship continuum make up the Cooperative working to fill identified gaps and needs in sea-level rise science and management. The NGOM SSC geographic area is defined as the coastal counties from the Pearl River to the Suwannee River, but the Cooperative partner base includes local, state, regional, and national partners. Additionally, though NOAA is the nucleus of the SSP, NGOM has expanded the partnerships to include academics, non-governmental organizations, and other federal, state, and local government departments.

Making a Difference

The recently updated Implementation Plan lays out the NGOM SSC mission statement, goals, short- and mid-term objectives, and logic models for achieving these milestones.

Mission Statement: The Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative will improve integration, translation, and transition of coastal data and research products in the northern Gulf of Mexico for application by regional and local resource managers, scientists, and community leaders for adaptation to sea-level rise (SLR) and coastal inundation.

2018 Work Plan

Top gaps the 2018 work plan addresses:

  • Making recommendations to decision makers
  • Strategic installation of SET sites to address current gaps
  • Improved outreach and communication of sea-level rise science and issues at the local and community level
  • Socioeconomic analysis of the cost of not adapting to planning for sea-level rise and economic valuation of threatened resources
