Students win art calendar contest

More than 1,050 fourth-graders from 40 Mobile and Baldwin county schools recently took part in the Marine Resources Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' "Conserving and Enjoying Alabama’s Coastal Resources" calendar art contest.

The contest, which promotes awareness and appreciation of the state’s coastal resources, includes student depictions of recreational and commercial fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, seafood, marine life, fishing piers and Alabama Marine Resources Enforcement.

A panel of three artists and two marine scientists judged the entries. About 70 entries were chosen to be featured in the 2007 calendar.

The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium will sponsor the matting and framing of each winning entry.

The works then will go on exhibit in four different museums.

In January and February, the winning artwork will be on display at the University of South Alabama Library Gallery. The show will be at the Mobile Arts Council for the month of April and at the Mobile Museum of Art in May and June. The final show will be at the Eastern Shore Art Center in Fairhope in July.

The calendars will be free to the public in January at various locations, including the Alabama Marine Resources offices in Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island.
