Shark Fest to allow families to catch, tag and release sharks

(OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss.) -- The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab (GCRL) and GCRL’s Marine Education Center are offering Shark Fest, a hands-on family learning adventure Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Ocean Springs.

This program, which will be held at the GCRL campus at 703 East Beach Drive, is for adults and their children over the age of 12. The family-oriented Explore a Seashore opportunity will allow participants to learn about sharks in a classroom setting from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. Then, they will sail on a research vessel in search of sharks from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The group will visit top shark-fishing hotspots around the Barrier Islands aboard the R/V McIlwain and catch and tag sharks to contribute to ongoing scientific research.
