(OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss.) — Melinda “Mindy” Phillips has joined the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) communications staff as a summer writing intern. She will be assisting Communications Coordinator Melissa Schneider by writing and editing newsletter articles and press releases, as well as taking photographs that highlight Sea Grant’s research and outreach programs.

Phillips is working toward her bachelor’s degree in public relations from The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) with a minor in marketing.

“I hope to learn as much as I can about marine studies while at MASGC,” Phillips said. “My overall goal would be to grow as a public relations specialist through intensive writing and research this summer. I am truly excited to be a part of a science program dedicated to serving coastal areas.”

Phillips is the vice president of events for USM’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter.

“We’re excited to offer our first summer communications internship, and Mindy was the strongest candidate among the applicants,” Schneider said. “Her writing ability, interest in science and enthusiasm about her field of study are already enhancing our communications program.”

Phillips will be located at the Sea Grant administrative office at USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs, Miss. She can be reached at
