Environmental literacy and workforce skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and other disciplines related to coastal resources are important to the populations that Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant serves. These skills advance cutting-edge research, promote sound resource management and maintain a globally competitive workforce.
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium's (MASGC’s) university-based research projects support undergraduate and graduate students in fields related to coastal resources. Reaching outside of universities, the MASGC outreach team offers tailor-made professional development workshops that bring up-to-date information to people who express a need for it.
Floodplain managers, city leaders, lawyers, nature tour guides and commercial and recreational fishermen, just to name a few, have taken part in MASGC training workshops.
Through camps, professional development trainings, volunteer programs, fellowships and continuing education opportunities, MASGC teaches about science. MASGC’s informal education opportunities also deliver current science information audiences of all ages.
K-12 educators receive the best available research on environmental education through MASGC programs. This information sharpens teaching skills and ensures that educators are bringing the latest scientific information into their classrooms. Through field-based and other environmental education programs, MASGC engages students, improves their performance, promotes action and instills stewardship.
MASGC continues to engage and support environmental education leaders as Alabama and Mississippi adopt common core standards, develop literacy principles in many Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields and integrate STEM education, the impending adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards, and the environmental education certification movement.
