Description: Dr. Chris Landsea, Branch Chief with the National Hurricane Center's Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch, will discuss how a changing climate affects hurricane formation and intensity, with a focus on the Gulf of Mexico region. He will also discuss the timeline for when we could see impacts to storms. Dr. Landsea will also share tips on what we (planners, floodplain managers, emergency managers) should be thinking about and/or doing to better prepare for changing conditions.

Description: During this 1.5 hour long training we will hear from three different leaders on environmental justice issues. Reilly Morse, President and CEO of the Mississippi Center for Justice, will discuss outcomes of litigation on the environmental justice landscape regarding flooding. Dr. David Perkes, Director of Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, will identify built and policy solutions to environmental justice issues regarding flooding. Dr. Lisa Mason, University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work, will discuss how to advance social and relational skills to promote climate resilience.

Description: As seas rise and coastal roads become more frequently inundated, they may reach a point that they are no longer usable. We have seen examples already in many of the Gulf States. Decisions about how to move forward when the expense of maintaining the road seems too high have complicated legal considerations. In this webinar we will discuss some of the various legal statutes that can influence a municipality’s options in these situations.

Description: Renee Collini, Program Coordinator for the Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative, will discuss how the probabilities of each sea-level rise scenario can be used to bring intentionality into planning that considers sea-level rise. She will review factors to consider when developing risk tolerance, how different levels of risk tolerance connect to scenario likelihood, and share tips on how to turn a selected amount of sea-level rise into information about future conditions such as high tide or storm surge and what kinds of decisions that could inform.
