Tracie Sempier, Ph.D.

Bio

Tracie Sempier serves as the resilience engagement lead at Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant. She engages with communities to help them become more resilient and works to decrease negative impacts of natural, technological and biological disasters on families, communities, the environment and the economy. Tracie collaborates with local, state and federal partners, as well as other Sea Grant and Land Grant programs, to build social connectedness and increase whole community resilience.

Working with NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory, Tracie also is creating a model for a regional extension program that will integrate physical and social science research from the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment-Southeast (VORTEX-SE) program to local application for a broader audience.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, she holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Mississippi State University. She has a master's in science and mathematics from Oregon State University and a bachelor’s degree in marine science and biology from the University of Alabama. Tracie began working with Sea Grant in 2008.

Program Involvement

VORTEX-SE Engagement Program

The Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment-Southeast (VORTEX-SE) brings together both physical and social scientists, researchers and meteorologists to look at specific conditions that produce tornadoes in the Southeast United States and how they impact society. The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, in collaboration with NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory, have partnered to create a model for a regional extension program that will integrate physical and social science research from the VORTEX-SE program to local application for a broader target audience.

Coastal Storms Program

The Coastal Storms Program is a nationwide effort to help coastal residents reduce the impacts storms have on their families, communities, property and environment.

Climate and Resilience Community of Practice

The Gulf of Mexico Climate and Resilience Community of Practice brings together extension, outreach and education professionals and community official in the Gulf to learn how coastal communities can adapt to sea-level rise, precipitation changes and other climate-related issues. 

COAST Resilience Institute

The COAST (Community Outreach and Strategic Training) Resilience Institute is a year-long training program aimed at equipping local leaders, municipal staff and community decision-makers wtih the latest science-based research for enhancing decision-making and increasing resilience.

Peer Listening Program

Peer listening is a type of support that occurs when people provide knowledge, experience, emotional, social or practical help to each other. Properly trained peer listeners can provide a number of services to the community, such as serving as an available ear to assist in problem solving or providing referrals to professionals.
